FIFA World Cup preparation helped accelerate new and improved soccer facilities at the University of Washington and Seattle University, creating permanent investments in collegiate athletics and the region’s ability to host future competition.
Preparation for Six Matches. Investment for Decades.
Preparing Seattle for the FIFA World Cup required places for the world’s best players to train. At the University of Washington and Seattle University, that preparation also created an opportunity to invest in facilities built for much more than a single tournament.
Supported in part by investments from the Washington State Legislature, new and improved fields helped meet the demands of hosting the World Cup while strengthening the universities’ soccer infrastructure for the athletes who would use them next.
Ready for What Comes Next
The final whistle didn't mark the end of their usefulness.
The fields were designed to support collegiate athletics, future championships and other competitions for years to come. What began as preparation for six World Cup matches became permanent infrastructure for the region.
